This week is monumental in the history books of the American experience. This week will go down for good or evil in every persona’s memory. This week the weak are celebrating and the broken are weak. The United States’ Supreme Court ruling same sex marriage voted 5-4 to allow gay marriage to take place across every state of our nation. The ruling is pretty straight forward, people of the same sex are allowed to marry. Same sex marriage is to be recognized and performed in every state of our union. Majority Rules A while ago I watched a television program about groups of animals, fish, birds, and deer who travel and live in packs. In seemingly an invisible second, the whole movement and migratory pattern of a large group of animals transforms in an instant. The fish are heading south, and as if a current is sweeping them into a new motion, they all shift simultaneously east. The same thing happens to a flock of birds. All of the sudden, their momentum shifts from one destination to another. During this program a group of scientist wanted to study the phenomenon of group think. It actually quite surprised me. The transfer of direction is done by democracy, not the kind that many believe the United States does, voting by representative leadership for changes and regulations, but actual democracy where every vote is counted and imported into the decision. This group of scientists studied a large group of migrating deer. The flock would stop to graze. One by one they would dip their head to consume food, and with great nerve and anxiety they would bring their eyes to the horizon to look for danger. When their tummies were full, each deer would look in the direction of her desired direction for travel, and she would hold her gaze until a vote was made. Instantly, when more than 50% of the population reached a consensus on the desired direction, the whole herd moved. There were no arguments, rebuttals or disputes, votes were cast and momentum shifted. Did you feel that?
